Psalm 121:7-8 The Lord will protect you from all evil; He will keep your soul. The Lord will guard your going out and your coming in From this time and forever.

Some years ago when I was hunting I was sitting on a deer watch at the end of a fallen log on the edge of an abandoned orchard. Apples still grew and although not the perfect apples we see in the grocery stores today they were still quite delicious if you could get past the appearance. As always these are a favorite of squirrels and on this particular day I watched as a noise at the opposite end pf the log caught my attention. As I turned to look I saw a large red apple moving slowly up the log toward me. After a few seconds the apple was shown to be clamped in the mouth of a silly gray squirrel who, upon “noticing” me dropped the apple and in his own shrieking flight scampered up the nearest tree. What’s the point? Simply this. The squirrel had gotten careless and had taken for granted that he was alone in that moment. The verse above does not relieve us of the burden of watchfulness and care. It simple means that when we follow the commands of God to the best of our ability we are equipped to withstand the worst that the world ill throw at us.

The body they may kill,

God’s Truth abideth still. (Martin Luther)
