Mark 7:26

The woman was a Greek, born in Syrian Phoenicia. She begged Jesus to drive the demon out of her daughter. (NIV)

Amid all of the catcalling, race baiting (in both directions vis black and white) that we hear loudly proclaimed from every source today I find it extremely refreshing to read about Jesus and His encounter with the woman mentioned in the verse above. The very fact that there was something about Jesus, a magnetism that gave this woman the unmitigated gall to even dare to approach Him speaks volumes. Often lauded for her courage, the real star of this moment from Jesus’ earthly ministry is Jesus Himself, and the fact that He was willing and able (speaking here of His authority) to cross whatever cultural lines he needed to in order to bring glory to His Father.

Remembering our challenge to “be imitators” 1 Thessalonians 1:6, 2:14) I am daily challenged by the behavior of our so-called leaders and the pundits who decry their every action. Learning not to listen, but rather to be in the moment and to be available for whatever the Spirit of God challenges you to undertake is perhaps the highest calling to which we may ever ascend.
