Psalm 56:4 (New International Version)

In God, whose word I praise— in God I trust and am not afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?

It is an idea as old as the Bible itself. On this particular day, when we stop to remember the lives given in the battle or this self-same idea we should remember not only the individuals and do them honor but also in grateful praise thank the God who inspired this idea in the first place. What idea is that you may ask? It is very easy to become confused with all the shouting going on from nearly every quarter. That idea is freedom. The promoters of tyranny, whether on the airwaves ,or in the classroom, or even conjured up within our own misguided hearts are everywhere shouting at us and trying to peddle their false ideas of what is right for people to live together.

The eagle has been the symbol of a sort of righteous power and dignity that represents the core concept of freedom and the very picture of watchful pride. We should be wary of becoming over proud, and recognize that restraint, informed by the love of God in Jesus Christ is behind the beautiful idea of what a nation might be.
