Luke 22 35 Then Jesus asked them, “When I sent you without purse, bag or sandals, did you lack anything?”
“Nothing,” they answered.
36 He said to them, “But now if you have a purse, take it, and also a bag; and if you don’t have a sword, sell your cloak and buy one. 37 It is written: ‘And he was numbered with the transgressors]; and I tell you that this must be fulfilled in me. Yes, what is written about me is reaching its fulfillment.” (NIV)

The imagery which the disciples may have seen in their minds eye would have been most probably something like the Roman short sword pictured above. Today, some, particularly those individuals who have seen military service may picture something like the AR-15 rifle as seen here. Regardless, we have to come to grips with the idea that weapons are abroad in the world. Also we know from experience that the world hates Jesus and all of those who follow him. For wide is the gate and broad is the road that leads to destruction, and many enter through it. (Matthew7:13)
Practically speaking, from the stand point of one who has been in the business of selling firearms and teaching firearm safety, to try to single out one particular weapon to prohibit will only result in more and more creative ways of “getting around” the myriad of laws governing ownership of firearms, explosives, etcetera. More laws are not the answer. Recognizing that popular culture embraces the whining and protestations of fools who know nothing about the issue it is more likely that embracing Biblical morality, the message of peace in Jesus over a very long period of time, (probably two or more generations) might begin to have such an effect as would be desired to quell the violent hearts of humankind.
More to come…
