Ephesians 6:12 For our struggle is not against [f]flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the powers, against the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in the heavenly places.

A lot of time is spent by boxers in the gym and out running sparring against an unseen opponent. They are not so much assessing the strength or techniques of the enemy as they are refining and perfecting the punch, the feint, the positioning of their body, working out their own strengths and weaknesses before they face the enemy. There are probably hundreds of hours spent in this sort of activity, “shadow boxing” for every minute spent in actual combat.
The human spirit must also train and work out in much the same way. We must go as far as we’re able to overcome our own weaknesses, sinful impulses, excesses of enthusiasm and ignorance before we are ready to do battle. Remember the weapons of our warfare, train with them. Prayer, the blood of the Savior, the power of His resurrection, the testimony of our mouths. The living example of those who’ve gone before.
