Philippians 1:6 (New American Standard Bible 1995)

For I am confident of this very thing, that He who began a good work in you will perfect it until the day of Christ Jesus.

I am confident that there are many Christian folk who have “hung their hats” so to speak on the promise contained in this verse. A narrow interpretation might just lead some to think that this is merely a passive sort of belief that simply means that God will “work out your issues” over an unspecified span of time. Nothing could be further from the truth. We have been given the gift of the fellowship of the Church with all of its thorns and thistles in order that we may come to more fully appreciate the nearly unimaginable grace of our Lord Jesus the Christ of God.

Simply put, you need to be deeply rooted in the Word of God and in fellowship with other believers. Over the span of my life, I have often found the need to be “gut checked” by someone wiser than I. It may hurt for a moment, but it may just help you get a little further up the road.

Because I have been given much I too must give

Because of Thy great bounty Lord each day I live

I shall divide my gifts from Thee

With every brother that I see

Who has the need of help from Thee – Grace Noll Cowell 1936
