Isaiah 61:1 The Spirit of the Sovereign Lord is on me,
because the Lord has anointed me
to proclaim good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,[a]
2 to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,

Although it probably didn’t look exactly like this, the day Jesus stood in the synagogue and read these words from Isaiah a gauntlet was thrown down. The world would never be the same. A Savior had come and declared Himself and from that moment on it was all out war.
Today is called Independence Day here in the USA. On the day the Declaration of Independence was ratified a great experiment in human self-government began. And like that day in the synagogue from that moment on a war began which goes on to this day. All of the elements of warfare are at play. Open combat. Guerrilla operations, spying, disinformation campaigns all sorts of tactical discussions and an ongoing refusal to understand the other point of view. The unfortunate thing about America is that politically there is no Savior in view. No man or woman will ever restore the USA to the principles so terribly eroded by the “give me everything, and ask nothing” culture we have become.
Only Jesus, in all the world can bring the kind of freedom which the human soul so desperately needs. It is for freedom that Christ has set us free. Stand firm, then, and do not let yourselves be burdened again by a yoke of slavery. (NIV)
