Exodus 30:48 So the cloud of the Lord was over the tabernacle by day, and fire was in the cloud by night, in the sight of all the Israelites during all their travels.

I was traveling yesterday through a town in Southern Illinois that reminded me for all the world of photos I’ve seen of Berlin, Germany at the end of World War II. I thought of this verse where the tabernacle, the “dwelling place” of God to those Israelites was the central and most visible security those people had. Have you driven through many large cities recently? The Church buildings are barely visible when they’re even still there. Frequently they are dwarfed by the temples of the “new” gods worshipped by the masses of people who throng our urban centers. Most of these temples are monuments to greed and entertainment. How sad. The “city on the hill” no longer seems to light the way for most people. How many abandoned buildings does it take before the Word of God is never told anymore? In the wake of the Southern Baptist and Roman Catholic scandals every sin and foible of people who call themselves Christian is being held up to the harsh light of a skeptical population.

If ever there was cause to live Christ in thought, in deed, in active engagement in the lives of the others the world has no use for, now is that time.
