Shields are interesting devices. Down through the years they have been used to protect moving and stationary soldiers. They have also been used as in the case of the early Romans, and later Norsemen as a means of protecting a group of combatants. In addition they have also been used to carry the dead from the battlefield and also as offensive weapons. There is little wonder then that as Paul was invoking the imagery of the Roman soldier to describe the Christian life this idea of the Faith Shield would play an important role. Through faith, wielding this as a shield we are able to face the scorn, persecution, and disregard of the world around us and to come together to protect one another within the society of other Christian folk.
