Psalm 23: Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me.

There is and actual place called the valley of the shadow of death in Israel. Jesus’ journey from Jericho to Bethany and finally Jerusalem brings to mind the words of David in the Psalm we have numbered 23. The valley of the “shadow of death” The valley of the sal-ma wet- Hebrew meaning dark shadow utilizes the word root in Hebrew that is synonymous with death. The meaning of the above phrase must be applied in three ways, to David, the author, Jesus, the Messiah, and you and I the recipients of God’s grace. For each of us the interpretation is different. For David the words expressed his absolute confidence in God even when in the midst of his enemies. For Jesus it must have helped his drive and determination to follow through with His father’s commands. For you and I it is the inexpressible joy that no matter what comes we are in His hands and as one interpreter has phrased it; That is enough.
