Philippians 1:29 For it has been granted to you on behalf of Christ not only to believe in him, but also to suffer for him,

There is a wonderful old gospel tune written by A. P. Carter entitled Lonesome valley. The chorus of that song goes like this.

You got to walk, that lonesome valley
Well, you got to walk, it for yourself
Ain’t nobody else, can walk it for you
You got to walk, that valley for yourself

The essence of this gift of suffering from our Lord is to discover within ourselves the catalyzing grace to endure the suffering and hatred of the world, the flesh, and the devil. In his wilderness journey Jesus confronted all three by the basic formula we all must live by. Very simply it is this: In every circumstance give glory honor and power to the Lord our God and trust him for very outcome. Strength will flow from him to face every obstacle and temptation even though for a while we may be hard put to see the end or endure what is happening to us.

Jesus does not gain from your “suffering for Him” except that in your enduring with His great grace you become an example to the whole world.
