1 Thessalonians 2:2 We had previously suffered and been treated outrageously in Philippi, as you know, but with the help of our God we dared to tell you his gospel in the face of strong opposition.

I have recently been given the opportunity to have access to a “news” website which purports to exist for the purposes of moving beyond the “outrage” cycle of the news and to present a “balanced” view. We need to understand what Paul meant by outrageous. We also need to look within to understand our own tendency to feel outrage. At its worst outrage conjures within us fear of loss, whether it be freedom or safety or some other high caliber value which we cherish. Face it. We have been manipulated for years by friends, media, the world, measuring everything by a set of values which in the end are completely artificial. God’s values for our lives are the only ones that matter. Jesus brough those values to life before our very eyes. The Holy Spirit empowers us to live those values in front of a skeptical world.
