1 Corinthians 3: 21 So then, no more boasting about human leaders!

Over the long haul of my walk in this world I have come to realize one important fact. Leaders, Icons, Examples, Models, however you choose to label your heroes all will disappoint you when held up to the example of (expected) sinless perfect performance. It must be so. Every great leader from the past has had their weaknesses eventually exposed by histories ever shifting perspectives. (Oh, Jack Webb where are you now?)

So, what was Paul getting at in this particularly important letter to a failing Church? He was writing about the geographical setting of the right Christian mindset. Our true North is Jesus Christ. Him alone. No human leader, no set of pronouncements, no edifice pretending to glory may stand in any place of primacy with regard to Jesus Himself.

If we could learn to point not at the Billy Grahams (although they are wonderful guideposts) of the world and instead look only to Jesus “the author and pioneer of our faith” (Hebrews 12:2 NIV) we should find ourselves that much further along on our journey up His holy mountain.
