Exodus 14:30 That day the Lord saved Israel from the hands of the Egyptians, and Israel saw the Egyptians lying dead on the shore.

This was the deliverance, the salvation the Israelites were to remember all of their days. Handed down from one generation to the next the story and the imagery must have become to many a mantra without meaning. This is the fickle and easily distracted heart of sin in humankind showing our true colors. The horror of the moment when confronted with the ugliness and the reality of our own need for saving is all to easily forgotten with the passage of time.

Christmas for me has always been that reminder. I need this Savior, this baby, born “on the wrong side of the blanket”, the lowest of the low. “The king of kings salvation brings” so the carol goes, and indeed he does. Where is your heart this season? Are you still “wandering inf the wilderness”, lost and without purpose? Look around your neighborhood. How many manger tableaus do you see? It seems less and less every year. I guess we may be in danger of forgetting the greatest gift of all time.
