Romans 3:23 (New International Version) …for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of
God,

A philosophy professor once gave an exam and simply posed the question “Why?” That was the entirety of the exam. The students were flummoxed for a moment or two then all of them began writing furiously. The very question of existence was theirs to answer. What a moment to show the depth of their thinking. A time limit was set for the completion of the exam and most groaned thinking there could never be enough time to answer such a complex question. Actually, there was one student who looked at the question, thought for a moment, wrote what couldn’t have been more than one sentence then got up and left. All the students smirked and thought “She failed this one.”
When next the class met the professor, a man given to dramatic gestures held up the exams f the students and threw them into the waste basket-all but one. The one exam paper he held up had only this short answer to the question: The answer to the question “WHY?” is two fold. Why not? Or Because!
God is sovereign and holy. Therefore, the answer Why not; simply that His ways are so much higher than ours that we can only understand what he reveals to us. The answer “Because.” Speaks to the failure of humankind to live up to the potential God has built into each and every one of us. The inevitable conclusion therefore is that without help, without a Savior we are doomed to defeat. Thank you, Lord for the Jesus of Christmas, for the Jesus of the cross, for the example of His life and the power of His resurrection.
