John 15:5,8 (King James Version) I am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.

A familiar sight to anyone who lives in wine country. And it seems like everywhere is wine country these days. In Upstate NY the Welch’s grape juice company has been a mainstay for almost two hundred years producing what was originally called Dr. Welch’s unfermented wine. A cooperative organization of growers the Welch’s concern mirrored the religious fervor of the times and found the right niche in a world that has long gone mad with alcohol and drunkenness.

I know it is not fashionable in these days to “take a stand against “John Barleycorn”. However, when as a pastor I had to counsel and pray for the wives, husbands, and children of chronic alcoholics over the years I soon lost any interest or desire for the pseudo sophistication of alcohol consumption. The cost is too great. Look if you will at the ministry of preachers like Billy Sunday who himself ws rescued from a life of debauchery. Use your brain. Does this make sense?
