Luke 2:4 So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. 5 He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. 6 While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born

I find it a fascinating piece of history that God moved on Caesar’s heart and stirred up in him an idea that he should count all of the people under his dominion. The idea of each one being required to go to their ancestral towns while seemingly strange, served to help the analysts project where certain troubles might come from in the future, and where greater profits might be gleaned from the colonies. Mary and Joseph were both quite insignificant in the whole process, but they were part of the shifting around in order to satisfy Caesar’s curiosity.

God thought otherwise. So many streams of prophecy came together that it is enough to baffle the imagination. Jesus was born in fulfillment of prophecies dating back hundreds, thousands of years. Thing about these things as we enter this advent season and enjoy the blessing of God’s power and wisdom.
