2 Corinthians 3:6 (New American Standard Bible 1995)

who also made us adequate as servants of a new covenant, not of the letter but of the Spirit; for the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life.

There is no room in the kingdom for nitpickers, those who would enforce an obscuratus of regulations with no sense of the thrust, the why and wherefore of those rules. In all of my years in ministry I have known several people who regarded anyone or any policy that threatened their particular comfort zone whether sanctioned or not in scripture. Music, dance, varying translations of the Word, mode of dress, all, largely stylistically ignored by God’s Word. Imagine, Jamaican Christians worshiping to the same music as German Lutherans or Scots Presbyterians. And yet, we still seem to have many “my way or the highway” kind of folks in the Church.

Pastors, while not exempt from such foolishness themselves are often expected to “surf” all of the waves that come up and declare Jesus’ “Peace! Be still.” over the storms. It seems a shame to me that we have emphasized “intellectual” study of the Bible, preaching that sounds more like psychotherapy, and socializing in our “small group” comfort zones, while the simple prayer meeting has all but disappeared from our churches. Hmm!
