Matthew 25:34-36
New International Version
34 “Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world. 35 For I was hungry and you gave me something to eat, I was thirsty and you gave me something to drink, I was a stranger and you invited me in, 36 I needed clothes and you clothed me, I was sick and you looked after me, I was in prison and you came to visit me.’

Well, there it is. This is the gauntlet thrown down inn the face of the devil. When ever we get too proud of our profession of faith there is always a point when Jesus’ Spirit asks us, “What have you done with the gift of my life? We may serve in a food pantry, we may work directly among the poor and imprisoned, but how are we doing when it comes to those closest to us? How are we doing with the people who persistently make bad choices, the folks who come around time after time?
Do you recall in scripture when Peter asked Jesus, “How many times must I forgive?” Do you recall Jesus’ answer? Matthew 18:22 Jesus *said to him, “I do not say to you, up to seven times, but up to seventy times seven.”
Sometimes life becomes a marathon of forgiving relatives and friends who drain you and keep coming back again and again until you are completely drained. It is at those times when we need to pray and seek strength from the Holy Spirit. He will sustain us, he will give us rest, he will reward our faithfulness.
