Hebrews 10:3o-31 For we know Him who said, “Vengeance is Mine, I will repay.” And again, “The Lord will judge His people.” It is a terrifying thing to fall into the hands of the living God.

How many times have you watched an old Western movie and heard some character actor (here, the late Jack Elam) intone the wors from this verse and then by some bizarre reckoning of the writer assume the role of God inaction out the very vengeance that Scripture claims belongs to God alone. Every day we hear of shootings, stabbings, and every other form of mayhem imaginable. We are titillated by the thought of it in books and movies, we feed in the lust for violence. Truly sin has done its best to overwhelm every day folk.
One panacea to all of this, to this lust for violence is to truly know scripture. However poorly interpreted in the past, there is no excuse for Christians today to be ignorant of scripture save their own sloth. Stand like a rock in the face of violence. If indeed we are faced with violence let it be for the name of Jesus, and for no other reason. Let us be a righteous shield for the innocent, and afford the freedom to live peaceably to all.
