Matthew 16:24 Then Jesus said to his disciples, “Whoever wishes to come after me must deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.

To deny oneself, means to look outward to the world around you. It is a radical shif of focus which allows for compassion, understanding, and action to correct injustice and make life better for someone else. It also may be costly, up to and including our very lifeblood.

To turn your focus outward you have to listen for the voice of God speaking to your spirit. If you do not you will only see the ugliness and horror of all of the sin in the world. We are not in ourselves strong enough to take all of that in with any kind of understanding. “Taking up our cross” is frequently a misunderstood concept. Look to Jesus. He gave all, surrendered all, he sacrificed all. He did that for you.
