Proverbs 29: 17 Discipline your children, and they will give you peace;    they will bring you the delights you desire.

18 Where there is no revelation, people cast off restraint;    but blessed is the one who heeds wisdom’s instruction.

What or who is uppermost in your mind? In a very short span of time while Moses was on Mount Sinai receiving the law from God Himself, The Israelite people lost all hope and turned to Aaron to take charge and “fix” things. They were confused and frightened. Aaron, responding out of his limited understanding decided they needed a symbol of some kind that would help to calm them. The golden calf was kind of a “no-brainer” for him because that was a representation many strange Gods from the geographical area known as the levant employed as a symbol of a god’s mode of transportation. (Maybe kind of like the “Batmobile”?)

The result, as always was a party. To Joshua it sounded like war had broken out in the camp. Moses, returning from what is probably one of the most amazing experiences of the Old Testament recognized the sound for what it was. 18 Moses replied: “It is not the sound of victory,  it is the sound of defeat; it is the sound of singing that I hear.”(Exodus 32) Proof positive of Solomon’s words, and perhaps one of the clearest examples of why we need Jesus as our Savior. We are simply not capable of even finding a direction without a God to show us the Way. If your sense of independence and freedom is outraged by these words then my prayers are for you, and I ask God to reveal to you the true depth of your need.
