Psalm1:1Blessed is the one
who does not walk in step with the wicked
or stand in the way that sinners take
or sit in the company of mockers,
2 but whose delight is in the law of the Lord,

When we don’t fall into line with the coercive, rhetoric of the wicked f the world we are in danger of experiencing the persecution of the mob. When we live for His name’s sake, that is Jesus we are in danger of experiencing the kind of persecution Jesus did all his life long. He was never the right sort. He didn’t proclaim the party line. He didn’t go along to get along. When we shrink in fear from who we are, we are walking in step with the wicked. If we say nothing, and do nothing then we are standing in the way sinners take. When we get comfortable with that situation, and that, I believe, is where far too many Christians find themselves, then we are sitting in the seat of the mockers.
Like the characters in the drawing above we stumble around in a wilderness of moral ambivalence unaffected by the looming disaster of our own sinfulness. The phrase “damned with faint praise” comes to mind. We need to read more deeply into the scriptures, all of it. But we must also apply it to the times and circumstances in which we live. “The holy Spirit will guide you into all truth.” (John 16:13)
