Colossians 4:5-6 Walk in wisdom toward those who are outside, redeeming the time. Let your speech always be with grace, seasoned with salt, that you may know how you ought to answer each one.

In the Old Testament books of the Pentateuch, that is the first five books comprising the wisdom of Moses a distinguishing aspect of the early nation is the status of persons as being within or outside the camp. While the commandments always took in this distinction the people were commanded over and over to regard the “alien in the gate” with an eye toward serving them and accepting them.
In our modern age where children are taught, and rightly so, about stranger danger, we also seem to be reflecting that fear within the congregations of most local churches. We often cloister ourselves away from what is going on outside of our buildings and wait for “them” to come to “us”. Does this seem right to you? Knowing any little amount of Gospel scripture I can find no warrant for this kind of thinking.
Missionary, apostolic lifestyles are risky, but rewarding. Risky, because we have been promised that persecution will come. Rewarding because every act of obedience is rewarded by God both now and in the future.
