1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except what is common to mankind. And God is faithful; he will not let you be tempted beyond what you can bear. But when you are tempted, he will also provide a way out so that you can endure it.

I suppose the best background to this text  are the texts from Matthew and Luke which chronicle the “testing” of Jesus in the wilderness. (Matthew 4:1-11, Luke 4:1-13). Sometimes it is easy to get the idea of a “one and done” sort of scenario. However, after a head on approach failed, the devil waited for a “more opportune time”.

As with virtually everything scriptural the accounts are maddeningly spare, sort of like a drone view from high above the events taking place. We see the broad strokes and are left sometimes wondering about the specifics and how they must be applied to our circumstances.

The remedy to these conundrums is simply to trust God, call on Jesus, and have the wisdom to wait, say “No”, and to trust that Jesus knows and intercedes for you in your weakness. You will find the courage, the way, and the means to overcome. Don’t give up.
