In his chapters-long treatise on the corruption and corruptibility of the human heart Jeremiah is at no small effort to try to get across the idea that we are helpless to “overthrow” the god of…well, you fill in the blank. Power, money, advantage, authority… all have the potential to overrule our spiritual senses and leave us as spiritual corpses. We, unfortunately, often begin with the healing verses even before we have understood and accepted the truth about the depth of our corruption and our dire need for a specific healing from God to make us alive for probably the first time in our lives. 2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!
