Ezekiel 18: 30 “Therefore, you Israelites, I will judge each of you according to your own ways, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent! Turn away from all your offenses; then sin will not be your downfall. 31 Rid yourselves of all the offenses you have committed, and get a new heart and a new spirit. Why will you die, people of Israel? 32 For I take no pleasure in the death of anyone, declares the Sovereign Lord. Repent and live!

I still heard it being aid today that “the sins of the father are visited upon the children…”. In on sense this is perhaps true. However, the statement is not a curse, it is not a prediction, nor is it an excuse to reject someone on the basis of their parentage, their race, their financial situation or their place in the world. Rather, it is to you and I who claim the love of Jesus to remind them of His love, His forgiveness, His mercy and grace and to encourage them to step back from the abyss of eternal death. God here makes clear to the captive remnant of Israel that what a person does will determine the outcome of their life and their life alone. In one of the recent Batman movies the hero intones in a verbal sparring with one of the other characters, “It’s not who I am it’s what I do…”. And so it is, it is what we do that matters in the long run. Did you love your children? Did you take the time to teach and admonish them in the love of God the father and his son Jesus the Christ?
