Luke 9:23-Then he said to them all: “Whoever wants to be my disciple must deny themselves and take up their cross daily and follow me. For whoever wants to save their life will lose it, but whoever loses their life for me will save it.

All too often this text is interpreted to mean what we sacrifice for following Christ. What we forego, what stop doing, what we leave behind. But we must not stop there n our understanding. To take up our cross and follow Jesus we must be prepared as best as we can be to endure the scorn and humiliation, the rejection and punishment of persecution even unto death. Most Christians today never think about just what it was that the people of Jesus’ day were so afraid of, why He engendered so much fear and hatred. The reason he we hated and feared is the same reason His name is feared and hated today- Holiness. What is unholy cannot abide the presence of the holy.

When Paul declared he would know nothing before the world “except Jesus and Him crucified” (1 Corinthians 2:2) he was throwing down a gauntlet. He was going to be Christ’s man, no excuses. We look at his life and all of his own sufferings for the name of Jesus. Now look at the roll of martyrs down to this day who are tortured, imprisoned and executed because of their faith in Jesus Christ.             The day is coming here in the so called civilized Western world when those same conditions will exist for Christians. Watch as we merrily legislate the Christian presence out of existence in our own country. Will you take up
