Romans 8:1 There is therefore now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.

I thought long and hard about this picture. I asked myself, “Who’s pointing the finger?” My theological training prompted the quick and easy answer, “Why it’s the devil of course.” But then something in my spirit said, “Look again.” So I stared and I thought, and I prayed and suddenly it dawned on me. I was pointing the finger. Satan had literally come up behind me and working through my own emptions had induced me to lift up my arm and point the finger of shame at myself. The result is that for just that moment I took my eyes off of Jesus and looked at my failure in that moment and heard suddenly the litany of all of my failures down the years of my life.

I thought then of Paul’s previous statement in Romans 7 24 What a wretched man I am! Who will rescue me from this body that is subject to death? 25 Thanks be to God, who delivers me through Jesus Christ our Lord! Be on your guard dear friends the devil seeks only to devour and destroy. If it is possible to drive a wedge between you and the Lord he is right there at your elbow. James 4:7 Submit yourselves, then, to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
