John 18: 3 So Judas came to the garden, guiding a detachment of soldiers and some officials from the chief priests and the Pharisees. They were carrying torches, lanterns and weapons.

The Greek word speira means a cohort of soldiers. From the Antonia fortress built by Herod the great some two hundred to three hundred soldiers according to our text accompanied Judas to the Garden of Gethsemane the olive grove where Jesus prayed. The word Gethsemane means “olive press”. My question for today is this. Why does Jesus yet today strike such fear into the hearts of despots and profligate sinners? The answer is as clear as the distinction between light and darkness. The world rejected Him, and down to this day the world fears him. When the light of God’s love shines on the people of this world many, even though they are loved by God the father, scurry like cockroaches back into the dark corners of their miserable lives.
The whole world was lost in the darkness of sin
The light of the world is Jesus…
Come to the light, it’s shining for thee.
