John 18: 25 Meanwhile, Simon Peter was still standing there warming himself. So they asked him, “You aren’t one of his disciples too, are you?”
He denied it, saying, “I am not.”
Several years ago I was with a church youth group at a concert put on by our local youth council. The artist was someone new and quite foreign to me. He was A Christian “rap” artist. Not so surprising these days, but back then it was, for me at least, a real departure. The young man performed several rhythmic “songs” then took the moment to share some devotional thoughts from this particular passage.
He concluded by challenging the group to step away from their cultural cowardice and answer the question boldly and out in the open. He looked at the crowd one by one, and there were several hundred there. And said “…or will you stay outside, warming yourself by the fire?”
The moment has haunted me down through all these years. Every time I shrunk away in denial, every time I have turned down the radio in my car lest anybody near me hear “my’ Christian music. Every time I have laughed nervously when one of my relatives or friends scoffed and persisted in their hatred of Jesus.
Lord help me to be true to you. Help me to repent of my sins of cowardice and to come completely into your love for me.
