1 Thessalonians 4: 10 And in fact, you do love all of God’s family throughout Macedonia. Yet we urge you, brothers and sisters, to do so more and more, 11 and to make it your ambition to lead a quiet life: You should mind your own business and work with your hands, just as we told you, 12 so that your daily life may win the respect of outsiders and so that you will not be dependent on anybody.

I have often asked myself what was going through Paul’s mind when he wrote these words to the Thessalonian church. He commends them for their love and them seems to tell them to “tone it down a little.” A “keep your head down” kind of attitude is quite easy to fall into. He is not, however advocating any of that. He is speaking of the very thing that seems today to “put people off” from church in general. We have, unfortunately garnered a reputation for minding everybody else’s business with motives that are far less than pure. If we go about in our own idleness criticizing and annoying others with our constant carping it produces little more than resentment. There will unfortunately be people like this in any organization. Paul here advises the leadership to be on guard lest the negative aspects he describes become the overriding character of the church.
