Matthew 6: 19 “Do not store up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moths and vermin destroy, and where thieves break in and steal. 20 But store up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where moths and vermin do not destroy, and where thieves do not break in and steal. 21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.

There is an inevitable gravity that comes with earthly gain. The more you acquire, the harder it is to keep. Living in an excessively affluent society we often do not realize that we are blessed with far much more than the vast majority of people in this sad and sorry world. Our generosity, or lack of it have become the defining battleground of out times. The Christian impulses toward generosity and sacrifice are being corrupted every day by those who would abuse that impulse and corrupt the kind of giving we are capable of by devising the very systems that Jesus speaks of here. When thieves and corruption at the institutional level thwart the generosity of individuals and small groups of compassionate people we fall into the trap of “getting more and giving less”.

When conviction comes we need to be reminded that everything we have is a gift from God, up to and including the very air we breathe. That he has gifted you and I with much will also in the long run require much from us. Being wise in our giving and keeping we should always let God guide our hearts and hands.
