Matthew 5: 13 ‘You are the salt of the earth. But if the salt loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again? It is no longer good for anything, except to be thrown out and trampled underfoot.

We have looked every which way in to the various possible meanings of Jesus’ words here. Salt is at on and the same time a preservative, and irritant, a flavoring enhancement, a staple in every household. It was something people labored to produce or acquire. And there is the key to understanding these verses. There is an essential need by the human creature for salt. When we undergo periods of extreme effort and perspire what we need then is water and salt replenishment. So too, without the replenishing, preserving, enhancement of the salt of Christian truth the human creature is doomed to a kind of death that is truly forever. Sal, the witness of Jesus’ love in this world is the hope of finding eternal life in Him.
