Matthew 5: Blessed are the peacemakers,
for they will be called children of God.
Remember the peace corps, remember the peace movement, remember the anti-nuclear movement? None of those had anything to do with real peace. The peace of God which transcends all understanding, (Philippians 4:7) is to be found only when the repentant heart reckons with the gift of the life of Jesus freely given on the cross and believes and accepts that it is the only means of salvation. The peacemakers therefore are the ones who, by whatever means they have, aid others to a place of decision. Perhaps the greatest example of this in lifetime was the evangelist Billy Graham. However, it is not the volume of folks who are led to decision, it is the obedience to the calling to become disciples and to be witnesses which are the real hallmarks of the peacemaker. Perhaps that is why Isaiah wrote: You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you. (Isaiah 26:3)
