Luke 2:7 (c) …because there was no room for them in the inn.

Over the last several years I have heard several Christmas Sermons, cantatas and children’s programs which seem to portray the innkeepers of Bethlehem with everything from greedy sadistic cruelty to ignorant indifference to the plight of a young family in crisis. Think though for a moment. How willing are we to impute these evil motives to someone who was most likely overwhelmed by the sudden influx of visitors to the tiny town at the whim of the emperor.
I worked in the catering industry for several years and was always amazed at how quickly the needs of the moment were likely to get out of hand. Co-ordinating supplies, people, delivery of services and infrastructure can very rapidly become a nightmare. Before you go huffing and puffing about the king of the universe and how important this moment was consider if you will what was before the service providers in this tiny place. Why should they have been gifted with any more insight than you at this time of year? Sure, they missed an opportunity. How many opportunities have you already missed this year?
