Judges 3: 31 After Ehud came Shamgar son of Anath, who struck down six hundred Philistines with an ox-goad. He too saved Israel.

The philistines had become a military power and were flexing their muscles in the Southern part of the kingdom. There was cruel limitations placed upon the people limiting their possession of any metal that could be construed as a potential weapon. God, keeping promises made to Joshua continued even after his time to “raise up” men and women to pilot the nation ever back toward the righteousness of God.
Shamgar using an ox goad, as our text tells us, dispatched six hundred of the Philistines who were tormenting the country. We know nothing more about the man save a reference in the “Song of Deborah and Barak” (ibid Chapter 5)
So, what can we learn from this? Shamgar broke no law in possessing the ox goad. From records we understand that the philistines so regulated the possession of metal that the Israelites were compelled to go to them to even have their ox goads sharpened or re-pointed. Using what was at hand he undertook to deliver his people from their oppressors. What can be easily understood is that God had called him, God had empowered him and God brought about the outcome he desired. So it should be with us. We are in the midst of a time when people are imposing and suggesting some very oppressive rules on some people while seemingly loosing the ravening wolves on the fringe of society to prey even more boldly upon the innocent. When will God raise up a deliverer? HE ALREADY HAS! JESUS THE MESSIAH. HE IS OUR DELIVERER!
